Yesterday was a good day to be a Democrat, for the first time in… let’s see… five years? It was a resounding, across-the-board sweep for Our Side, including victories for women (NJ and VA governorships) and people of color (NYC mayor and VA AG), as well as
Ghazala Firdous Hashmi (/ɡəˈzɑːlə ˈhɑːʃmi/ gə-ZAHL-ə HASH-mee; born July 5, 1964)… an American politician, academic administrator, and educator who is the lieutenant governor-elect of Virginia…. Upon taking office, Hashmi will become the first Asian-American and Muslim elected to statewide office in Virginia, along with being the first Muslim woman to win statewide office anywhere in the United States. It warms the cockles of my bleeding heart. Not only because we won a few things (including redistricting in my state, an unfortunate necessity), but because — for the time being at least — we can still have actual elections where people’s votes count. This is not a thing to take for granted in the Year of Our Land 2025. If it remains true this time next year, the midterms are going to be a bloodbath in the best possible way.
One assumes the Reich has a plan to keep that from happening. That Fucking Guy has shown he doesn’t need any basis in reality to declare that our cities are in chaos and he needs to send in the military. I expect an attempt to declare martial law and delay the election indefinitely.
But it’s also true, I think, that some law of political gravity may be reasserting itself. TFG is already historically unpopular and growing more so by the day, which at some point has to start emboldening Republicans to flee the sinking ship. If it becomes the regime vs. everybody… well… it will be wild, to borrow a phrase.
I know it’s not wise to scenario too rosily. Later today, for instance, the Supreme Court will start hearing arguments in the case of Shithead’s Random Tariffs, and there’s every reason to think they’ll write him another blank check. And given all the other fucked-up things that have happened in the last 10 months, who knows what may come to pass in the year to come?
So before that happens let’s take a moment to just be happy. Allah knows we need one.
yea today, 12 months to survive.
