Today I am thinking of the words of Hunter S. Thompson:

And that, I think, was the handle – that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of old and evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn’t need that. Our energy would simply prevail. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave.

It’s important to note, of course, that the revolution he is describing ultimately, as Danny the Dealer put it, “failed to paint it black.” The good guys don’t always win.

Still: At the moment it feels like we have the wind at our backs. It’s funny that Kamala at 60 (she’s a Libra too, I just found out) is the young candidate in this election, but it’s true. Her opponent is a generation older and — with all due respect to the octogenarians I know, like my mom, who is sharp as a fking tack — has been falling apart before our eyes. It takes a willful kind of foolishness to listen to that rambling dotard and think, yes, this is who I want to be the leader of the free world.

I choose to believe that we as a nation are smarter than that. And yeah, I know… no one has ever gone broke underestimating the intelligence of the average American. Or as George Carlin said, think of how stupid the average person is, then remember that half the population is stupider than that.1

But still, still… it you go up on a steep hill in Humboldt County, with the right kind of eyes you can see the wave building. Hopefully it will crest just in time.
